Axial and Radial Diffusivity Measures Detect Brain Tissue Injury in Heart Failure Patients
نویسندگان
چکیده
Heart failure (HF) patients show brain tissue loss or injury in autonomic, cognitive, and emotional regulatory areas (1, 2); the regions with tissue injury overlap sites of altered functional MRI signals to autonomic challenges (3, 4). Some structural injury appears on T2-relaxometry procedures, and could result from different pathological processes, including hypoxia/ischemia accompanying perfusion or breathing characteristics in the syndrome. These processes could introduce axonal loss or myelin loss, either independently or in combination; however, T2-relaxomety indicates only generalized tissue damage. In contrast, diffusion tensor imaging-based indices, including axial diffusivity, which measures diffusion of water molecules parallel to the tissue fibers and indicates axonal status, and radial diffusivity, which assesses water diffusion perpendicular to the fibers and primarily shows myelin changes (5) can offer additional insights into types of pathology in HF. We aimed to assess axial and radial diffusivity in HF patients to reveal types of axonal tissue injury present in affected brain sites.

Bidirectional Changes in Anisotropy Are Associated with Outcomes in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Mild traumatic brain injury results in a heterogeneous constellation of deficits and symptoms that persist in a subset of patients. This prospective longitudinal study identifies early diffusion tensor imaging biomarkers of mild traumatic brain injury that significantly relate to outcomes at 1 year following injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS DTI was performed on 39 subjects...
متن کاملOlfactory Impairment in Parkinson’s Disease Studied with Diffusion Tensor and Magnetization Transfer Imaging
BACKGROUND Olfactory impairment is an early manifestation of Parkinson's disease (PD). Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) and Magnetization Transfer (MT) are two imaging techniques that allow noninvasive detection of microstructural changes in the cerebral white matter. OBJECTIVE To assess white matter alterations associated with olfactory impairment in PD, using a binary imaging approach with DT...
متن کاملEvaluation of the relationship between axon injury and clinical symptoms in patients with multiple sclerosis using diffusion tensor MRI imaging
Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive imaging technology that shows detailed anatomical and pathological images. It is often used for disease detection, diagnosis, and treatment monitoring, in particular with neurodegenerative diseases, such as Multiple sclerosis (MS), Alzheimer's and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. However, conventional MRI provides only qualitative inf...
متن کاملAge-related differences in multiple measures of white matter integrity: A diffusion tensor imaging study of healthy aging.
Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) measures diffusion of molecular water, which can be used to calculate indices of white matter integrity. Early DTI studies of aging primarily focused on two global measures of integrity; the average rate (mean diffusivity, MD) and orientation coherence (fractional anisotropy, FA) of diffusion. More recent studies have added measures of water movement parallel (axi...
متن کاملLate measures of microstructural alterations in severe neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy by MR diffusion tensor imaging.
Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is a major cause of brain damage in infants, and is associated with periventricular white matter injury and chronic neurological dysfunctions. However, the mechanisms of the chronic white matter injury and reorganization are still unclear. In this study, in vivo diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was employed to evaluate the late changes of white matter micr...
